How to Spot an Authentic Berber Rug
The rug market is full of imitations and mass-produced products sold as "Moroccan" or "Berber." How can you be sure you're buying an authentic rug? Here are the key tips.
Features of an Authentic Berber Rug
1. Material — 100% Wool Genuine Berber rugs are woven from natural sheep wool. The wool may be raw (unprocessed) or dyed with natural dyes. Avoid synthetic rugs or blends.
How to check? Wool has a characteristic, slightly "animal" smell — this is normal and indicates authenticity.
2. Handmade Each knot is tied by hand by an artisan. Look at the back of the rug — it should be "imperfect," with small irregularities.
Warning sign: Perfectly even knots indicate machine production.
3. Unique Pattern No two Berber rugs are identical. Each artisan weaves according to her own vision, often improvising.
4. Origin Ask the seller about the specific region and artisan. Authentic sellers know the history of their rugs.
5. Weight and Density Berber rugs are usually heavy — good wool and dense weave have their weight.
