From first conversation to rug in your home
Commissioning a rug with Common Thread isn't a choice from a ready-made list — it's a shared piece of work on something that doesn't exist yet. It begins with a conversation about your room, and ends with a rug woven by hand in a partner atelier in the Atlas Mountains — knot by knot, following the specification we agree together. The whole process, from first contact to delivery at your door, usually takes three to four months. Below, we walk through each stage.
From first conversation to rug in your living room: usually 3–4 months, of which 8–12 weeks is the weaving itself.

Consultation
It starts with a conversation — a video call or an in-person meeting, at a time and place we arrange together. We have no showroom, so this conversation stands in for that first visit to a shop: you tell us about the room your rug will live in, share photographs of the space, and describe how you use it day to day. Together, we choose a starting style — from raw Beni Ourain to vivid Boujaad — as the springboard for your design. Nothing about this conversation commits you to anything: it's the start of a dialogue, not an order.

Design
The conversation becomes a design: we sketch out the pattern, proportions and an initial colour direction for your rug. A screen never shows wool honestly, so straight after, we post you physical swatches of fibre and dyed thread — you feel the material and judge the colour in your own home's light, at different times of day. From there, we settle the final colour palette, knot density and wool weight — the three decisions that shape how the finished rug looks and how long it lasts. Only once all three are settled does the design go to the atelier.

Weaving
Your rug is woven by hand in a partner atelier in the Atlas Mountains — knot by knot, exactly to the agreed design. Weaving is the longest stage of the whole journey, and takes an honest 8–12 weeks, depending on size and knot density. We stay in touch throughout: every so often, we send you updates straight from the loom — photographs showing your rug growing row by row, from the first knots to an increasingly clear pattern. It's tangible proof that someone is genuinely working on your rug, not just leaving it to wait in a production queue.

The journey to you
When your rug comes off the loom, it doesn't travel to you just yet — it comes to us first. We take it into our own hands: combing out the loose fibres every new handwoven rug naturally sheds at first, checking each dimension against the specification you signed, and photographing the finished piece in natural light — up close and in detail. Only once you've confirmed it looks exactly as we agreed at the design stage do we ask for the second half of the payment and set the insured door-to-door delivery in motion. Customs and logistics stay entirely on our side — no rug travels to you before it has passed through our hands.

In your home
Your rug arrives with a certificate of authenticity and a wool care kit — included with every Common Thread rug. But our role doesn't end there: we stay in touch long after delivery, offering advice on everyday care and when it's worth turning the rug so it wears evenly. The common thread that connected your idea to the atelier in the Atlas Mountains doesn't end on delivery day — it's the start of a long relationship with a rug woven only for you.
