Symbolism in Berber Rugs

Berber rugs are not just beautiful decorations — they are carriers of meanings, stories, and beliefs. Each pattern has its symbolism, passed down through generations.

The Most Important Symbols

Diamond (losange) The most common motif in Beni Ourain rugs. Symbolizes protection, fertility, and femininity. According to tradition, diamonds protect against evil.

Zigzag Represents water and life. In Morocco's dry climate, water has special meaning — its symbol brings fertility and abundance.

Triangle Symbol of woman and fertility. Two connected triangles (hourglass) symbolize the cycle of life.

Eye Protection against the "evil eye" (al-ayn). A popular motif in Mediterranean and North African cultures.

Parallel Lines Symbolize the path of life, continuity, and harmony.

Regional Differences

  • Beni Ourain: Geometric diamonds and lines dominate
  • Boujaad: More abstraction, free interpretations of traditional motifs
  • Azilal: Expressive, colorful symbols, often asymmetrical

Do Artisans Know the Symbolism?

Yes and no. Younger weavers often learn patterns from their mothers and grandmothers, not always knowing their full meaning. But the tradition lives on — and each rug carries an echo of the past.
