Beni Ourain is one of the world's most recognisable rugs — and one of its oldest. It was woven by women of the Ait Ouraine, a Berber tribe living in the Middle Atlas, where winters can be harsh and snow can lie on the ground for months. The rug had a literally life-sustaining function here: it served as blanket, mattress and insulation against the cold of a stone floor, which is why it was woven from dense sheep's wool, often left in its natural, undyed ivory shade. The geometric lines and diamonds we now read as minimalist pattern once carried meaning — signifying fertility, protection for the home, or a weaver's standing within her family. It wasn't until the mid-twentieth century that modernist architects discovered Beni Ourain rugs, recognising in their raw, sculptural texture a natural complement to modern architecture. - Classic Beni Ourain draws on a restrained, natural palette — ivory, ecru and undyed sheep's white, broken up with black or deep brown. The pattern is usually sparsely placed diamonds, lines and tribal symbols, leaving plenty of room for the texture of the wool itself. Consultation
We arrange a short video call to get to know your room, its dimensions and what you want from your rug. This is when we choose a style together — from raw Beni Ourain to vivid Boujaad — as the starting point for your design.

Design and swatches
From the consultation, we prepare an initial design and post you physical swatches of wool and dyed thread. You feel the material, check the colours in your own home's light, and only then approve the direction of the design.

Wool and colour
We settle on the final colour palette, knot density and wool weight. At this stage, we refine every detail — from the shade of ecru to the depth of black in the pattern — before the design goes to the atelier.

Weaving and loom updates
Your rug is woven by hand in a partner atelier in the Atlas Mountains. Over the weeks it takes to weave, we send you photographs straight from the loom, so you can watch the design become a finished rug.

Approval and delivery
Once your rug comes off the loom, we send photos and video of the finished piece for your approval. Only once you've confirmed it do we arrange insured shipping to your address.
