In many Berber families, a rug woven for a daughter's trousseau or wedding was once her most important dowry — proof of skill and standing within the community. The patterns were never arbitrary: they differed between tribes and regions, so a practised eye can tell where a rug comes from simply by the arrangement of its lines. This knowledge isn't written down in any manual — it lives in the hands and memory of the women who weave, watching how their mothers did it before them. Today, the tradition faces new pressures: younger generations increasingly move to the cities, and the craft demands time that industrial production has no honest way to price. That's why fair pay and long-term partnership matter more now than ever — they determine whether this thread of weaving holds, or breaks, for the next generation.

We work with a network of small ateliers and family weaving workshops scattered across the Atlas Mountains — not a single factory, but many individual craftswomen with whom we've built relationships over years. We choose each one not only for the quality of her knot, but for fair working conditions: we pay rates that reflect the time and skill a rug demands, not the lowest price the market will bear. We value long-term relationships over one-off orders — it lets weavers plan their work, and gives us confidence in quality and timing. We're always expanding our partner network, seeking out new ateliers that share our approach to craft and fairness.
How we choose partners
Before partnering with a new atelier, we assess the quality of its work through samples — knot density and regularity, yarn quality and dye fastness. We also discuss working conditions and pay, because we treat craft quality and fairness to weavers as a single standard, not two separate ones. We only bring ateliers into ongoing partnership once they've consistently met both, order after order.
