Do New Wool Rugs Shed?
Short answer: yes, and it's completely normal. New wool rugs "shed" loose fibers during the first weeks or months of use. We explain why this happens and how to deal with it.
Why Do Wool Rugs Shed?
Wool is a natural fiber composed of many layers. During weaving and trimming, loose fiber fragments are created that gradually release with use.
How Long Does Shedding Last?
- Intense shedding: first 2-4 weeks
- Moderate: up to 3-6 months
- Minimal: can last up to a year
After this period, the rug "stabilizes" and shedding practically stops.
How to Deal with Shedding?
- Vacuum regularly — but use a suction nozzle, not a rotating brush
- Be patient — it's a natural process that passes
- Don't wipe by hand — this can pull out more fibers
- Avoid moisture — wet wool sheds more
Is My Rug Defective?
No, if shedding is even and gradually decreases. Contact us if:
- "Bald" spots appear
- Shedding doesn't decrease after several months
- Fibers fall out in whole tufts
