Beni Ourain vs Boujaad — Which One to Choose?

Beni Ourain and Boujaad are the two most popular styles of Moroccan Berber rugs. Although both come from Morocco and are handwoven, they differ in almost everything — from colors, through patterns, to the atmosphere they create in an interior.

Beni Ourain — Elegance in Simplicity

Origin: The Beni Ourain region in the Middle Atlas, inhabited by the Beni Ourain tribe.

Appearance:

  • Cream or white background
  • Geometric patterns in brown, gray, or black
  • Characteristic diamonds and lines
  • Long, fluffy pile (2-4 cm)

Character: Calm, elegant, timeless. Beni Ourain is a "classic" — it fits almost any interior.

Works best:

  • In minimalist, Scandinavian interiors
  • In bright, spacious rooms
  • As a neutral background for colorful accessories
  • In the bedroom — exceptionally soft and warm

Boujaad — An Explosion of Color and Emotion

Origin: The Boujaad region in Beni Mellal province, known for its rich artistic tradition.

Appearance:

  • Bold, saturated colors: pink, terracotta, red, orange, purple
  • Abstract, irregular patterns
  • Often "chaotic" composition — but full of harmony
  • Medium pile length

Character: Expressive, artistic, emotional. Boujaad is a "statement piece" — it catches the eye and defines the character of the room.

Works best:

  • In neutral interiors as a central color accent
  • In eclectic, boho arrangements
  • In the living room as a focal point
  • When you want to add warmth and personality to your space
